Purpose: The purpose of this study was to present a review of the qualitative evidence on elder populations in Korea.
Methods: From three Korean databases, 105 articles published between 2001 and 2010 were reviewed. Articles were classified based on the year of publication, methodological approach, participants¡¯ demographic characteristics, and key concepts.
Results: The analysis reflected the current trends of qualitative studies: An increasing number of studies with female participants and frequent use of phenomenology and grounded-theory methodology. Five key concepts were identified from the findings of published articles: life and death experiences, social issues among elders, health and illness experiences, caregiver roles, and health promotion processes.
Conclusion: Overall, elders constructed their experiences in relation to their families. Although elder are highly respected in Korean culture, difficulties due to ageism were identified.
